Duane Bryant is a very good friend of mine going back to my childhood days.  Though he's not a musician, we both grew together with the music.  In my opinion, he's a professional listening artist and can break the music down on many levels and far better than some actual musicians.  In his house, there are walls of albums and cds.  He's always had a massive collection of music.  His musical palette spans decades and crosses all genres. During a recent conversation, he mentioned the concept below and I wanted to share it with readers to give them a perspective.

Evolution of Music

by Duane Bryant

Music is like the evolution of man which began with a monkey and as time moved  forward, the monkey evolved into a human. That’s how music is supposed to be, no matter if it’s Jazz, R & B, Hip Hop, Doo Wop, or Rock & Roll.

For instance: John Coltrane and Prince.  The more spiritual they became, the more they grew and the more their music evolved. Some musicians and fans would say these guys lost their minds but, they didn’t. They evolved in their spirit and music.  They grew.  Some fans and musicians expect them to play the same music the same way as they did when they emerged.

Some people are still in the pre-k mindset when it comes to music. They need people like Quincy Jones, Prince, Chick Corea and Santana to help them to grow and evolve from pre-school to a graduate school of music.
